Strate Research

Designers need research, research needs designers!

More than ever, this motto accompanies Strate School of Design, as well as its ecosystem: students, teachers, pedagogical team and academic and institutional partners. Within the complexity that surrounds us, designers cannot act alone. In order to build meaning, it is essential to take a step back and work in a multidisciplinary manner.

Qu'est-ce que la Recherche en design et Sciences Humaines et Sociale de Strate ?

Research-Team

Since 2013, Strate Research, the Department of Research in Design and Humanities and Social Sciences, has been working to develop designers' expertise on identified themes, but also to equip them with a critical approach and a reflective approach. Thus, to do research in Design and Social and Human Sciences is to explore, model, and understand the multifactorial issues of the contemporary world.

“Design research is a systematic search for knowledge and the acquisition of knowledge related to the generalized human ecology considered from the designer's own way of thinking, i.e. from a project-oriented perspective" Alain Findeli (2010): Searching for design research questions; some conceptual clarifications.” Alain Findeli (2010)

Nos activités de recherche : axes et laboratoires

Strate's teacher-researchers work at the heart of research projects and research-action, on the methods, modes of thinking and postures of designers acting in complexity. They also develop four major research themes:

Strate-Research-BANNER 2

  • Ecologies of living together with emerging technologies: by experimenting with uses and forms of living together, question the place of these technologies as well as their role and impact in the contemporary world.
    Discover Robotics by design lab.
  • Design, Strategies & Organizations: operating modes to embody virtuous reasons for being, and contribute to creating positive impact by developing the full potential of the human being.
Discover Exalt design lab and Reset design lab.
  • Design & Plasticity of living places: a systemic and sensitive approach to territories to question the new hybrid lifestyles and co-construct the Living of tomorrow.
Discover the Plasticity of Living Places Chair.
  • Design Ethics & Pedagogy: aiming at the mutual emancipation of the school's actors through the awareness of their own point of view, the development of critical thinking and the designers' sense of responsibility
    Discover Ethos design lab.

Research is developed in an 'active', situated and committed manner in the field of projects that can be collaborative and/or prospective but also in the implementation of a "Pedagogical Research Course for Designers" from the 1st to the 5th year. Thanks to its anchorage in the practice of design, Strate Research pilots the scientific teaching at the school and introduces students to research methodologies. This work operates on three levels via :

  • the teaching of humanities and social sciences,
  • the teaching of writing,
  • an introduction to the scientific approach and to design research.

Finally, Strate Research leads the Scientific Council of Strate School of Design. Its role is to contribute to a reflection on the scientific and pedagogical environment of the school. The members of the Scientific Council shed light on the main orientations to be retained, research themes and scientific approaches, by proposing guidelines for the research culture and the design pedagogy.
