Designers need research, research needs designers!
More than ever, this motto accompanies Strate School of Design, as well as its ecosystem: students, teachers, pedagogical team and academic and institutional partners. Within the complexity that surrounds us, designers cannot act alone. In order to build meaning, it is essential to take a step back and work in a multidisciplinary manner.
Since 2013, Strate Research, the Department of Research in Design and Humanities and Social Sciences, has been working to develop designers' expertise on identified themes, but also to equip them with a critical approach and a reflective approach. Thus, to do research in Design and Social and Human Sciences is to explore, model, and understand the multifactorial issues of the contemporary world.
“Design research is a systematic search for knowledge and the acquisition of knowledge related to the generalized human ecology considered from the designer's own way of thinking, i.e. from a project-oriented perspective" Alain Findeli (2010): Searching for design research questions; some conceptual clarifications.” Alain Findeli (2010)
Strate's teacher-researchers work at the heart of research projects and research-action, on the methods, modes of thinking and postures of designers acting in complexity. They also develop four major research themes:
Research is developed in an 'active', situated and committed manner in the field of projects that can be collaborative and/or prospective but also in the implementation of a "Pedagogical Research Course for Designers" from the 1st to the 5th year. Thanks to its anchorage in the practice of design, Strate Research pilots the scientific teaching at the school and introduces students to research methodologies. This work operates on three levels via :
Finally, Strate Research leads the Scientific Council of Strate School of Design. Its role is to contribute to a reflection on the scientific and pedagogical environment of the school. The members of the Scientific Council shed light on the main orientations to be retained, research themes and scientific approaches, by proposing guidelines for the research culture and the design pedagogy.
