Explore, project yourself in a daily life with Artificial Intelligence and Social Robotics, that's what Robotics by Design Lab offers, a common laboratory within the ecosystem of Strate school of design.
While Artificial Intelligence and robotics were born over 60 years ago, they have become our technological, economic and social reality. Between a techno-centric imaginary and the prospect of lives lived under the benevolent attention of empathetic artefacts, it is more than urgent to study and anticipate the scenarios of a world shared with robots or devices with artificial intelligence. Created in 2019 by Strate School of design, "Robotics by Design Lab - Artificial Intelligence, Robots & Humans. Ecologies of Living Together?" (RbD Lab) is a joint laboratory that brings together companies, researchers, robotics experts and world leaders in design and innovation around CIFRE theses.
New forms, behaviours, uses and experiences: it is through an approach combining design, human sciences, computer science and robotics that RbD Lab questions the fundamental notions of relations between humans and robots to invent a new ecology of living together. The multidisciplinary collaboration between academic and industrial partners takes place at the very heart of the company's fields. Through the means of design, we wish to think of a future where robotics makes sense.
Team:
Since 2017, Strate Research has developed a unique "common laboratory" model that engages academic partners, organizations and institutions in a co-construction and project research approach around company theses (CIFRE theses). The duration of a laboratory is 4 years, time to host theses for 3 years and to build a learning community around the issues and themes common to the partners.
The activities of the RbD Lab are multiple: follow-up of theses, 10 “robotoriales” per year (common working group of PhD students), 1 annual workshop personalized by company to promote the diffusion of innovation with the internal actors of each company, 1 summer camp to work on common major themes and 1 annual public conference dedicated to the work of the laboratory.
Finally, the objective of these exchanges and productions is to create an international visibility thanks to research publications and to mutualize the experimentation fields of AI and robotics applications to improve the operational excellence of the companies and the cross-fertilization and open innovation with actors in different sectors.
The laboratory's program is initially organized around its 4 CIFRE theses:
At Strate School of Design, the designer relies on what we will call the "design mix", which mixes:
*Ikigai" means joy of living and reason for being
Robotics by Design Lab is also interested in 4 transversal themes: ethics by design, design for robotics and robotics by design, modeling of imaginary and the robotic body with as a central quest the modeling of otherness proposed by the presence effect of social robots.
