Présentation du laboratoire

Created by Strate in 2017, Exalt Design Lab - Design, Experiences, Strategies is the first joint laboratory that brings together industrial and academic partners to work on the integration of design within organizations and the creation of value in their ecosystems.

The systemic approach to design recognizes the complexity, the invisible architectures and the interrelationships that exist between each element of a whole. It brings together analytical and sensitive intelligence to propose meaningful narratives and experiences. Thinking about design from the perspective of experience means asserting the holistic dimension of experience, and bringing all its dimensions into the innovation and design processes.

Organizations thus give themselves the means to recognize and take care of their public, collaborators, partners... and to go beyond the pressing injunctions to innovate that they are subjected to. Design research, flexible and iterative, thus helps to question the meaning (significance and direction) of any project, to orient oneself in the uncertain in a strategic and reflexive way.

Team:

  • Estelle Berger, Head of the joint laboratory
  • Ioana Ocnarescu, Strate Research Director
  • Isabelle Cossin, PhD, Strate Research Researcher
  • [Frédérique Pain - until 2019, Strate Research Director and Head of the laboratory]

C'est quoi un labo commun : fonctionnement, originalité et enjeux du laboratoire.

Research-Team

Since 2017, Strate Research has developed a unique "common laboratory" model that engages academic partners, organizations and institutions in a co-construction and project research approach around company theses (CIFRE theses). The duration of a laboratory is 4 years, the time needed to host theses for 3 years and to build a learning community around the issues and themes shared by the partners.

Exalt is Strate's first joint laboratory. It has 3 main missions:

  1. PUBLISH (Academic research): Development of design as a research discipline, from the perspective of Design Practice and Design Studies Interdisciplinary research between Design, Management Sciences, SIC... Qualification and quantification of the value of design and experience for companies Publications of academic articles in international conferences and journals Development of tools and methods for practice
  2. SHARE (Communities): International monitoring of best practices in the field of design and innovation Animation of a place of sharing and exchange between academic and professional actors Insertion in an international community of action research in Design, with Design, for Design
  3. TRANSFORM (Organizations): Construction and diffusion of a Design culture, and development of Management by Design within organizations Experimentation and support of desirable and sustainable organizational transformations Evolution of teaching in multidisciplinary schools/universities, to train design professionals

La recherche

strate lyon

Based on the keywords Design, Experiences, Strategies, the activities of the joint laboratory have been deployed along six research axes:

  • Designers and corporate cultures: a marriage of convenience?
  • Designers' career evolution: status, experience, expertise
  • Design for experience: guaranteeing consistency and quality, from scenario to experience
  • Measuring the value of experience as an intangible asset for organizations
  • Articulating tools and methods for a sensible governance of design
  • Managing as designing': committed and learning teams.

The five industrial partners have formed the field of the multidisciplinary CIFRE action research theses:

  • Heurs et malheurs du design intégré : processus continu d’intégration du design au sein d’un géant de la grande distribution. Thèse Sciences de gestion + Design en CIFRE Carrefour, by Mélissa Alauze, supervised by Sihem Jouini (CRG Polytechnique) & Estelle Berger (Strate)
  • Les effets dramaturgiques du dispositif de co-conception. Thèse SIC + Design en CIFRE Emakina, by Justine Peneau, supervised by Annie Gentès (Télécom Paris) & Estelle Berger (Strate)
  • Telling the story: analysis of users’ production and their effects in user-centred design. Thèse SIC + Design en CIFRE InProcess, by Laurent Mertz, supervised by Annie Gentès (Télécom Paris) & Ioana Ocnarescu (Strate)
  • La force du signe faible : rôle des médias pour l’intégration du design au sein des organisations. Thèse SIC + Design en CIFRE OTIS, by Dorian Reunkrilerk supervised by Annie Gentès (Télécom Paris) & Estelle Berger (Strate)
  • Design, a strategic lever for change. Thèse Sciences de gestion + Design en CIFRE MAIF, by Julie Sahakian, supervised by Sihem Jouini (CRG Polytechnique) & Estelle Berger (Strate)
